Dance Arts

This course combines a study of dance theory, history, and choreography with physical training in proper technique.  Activities are designed to provide training in life skills and to enhance the students’ physical well-being.  Classes are structured to increase the students’ knowledge and appreciation of the art of dance, to enhance their technique in all aspects of dance as well as choreography skills, and to improve their physical well-being and cooperative interaction.  Ballet tests will be administered throughout the year-performance based.  DME is a performance class.  All students are required to perform, dress out in proper dance attire, and attend rehearsals as scheduled.  

Meet the Instructor:

Nicole Hunkapillar

Nicole Hunkapillar has been a member of the FamiLEE staff and the proud Director of Dance Magnet Ensemble since August of 1993--GO GENERALS!!! She graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. Nicole has taught with several dance studios in the Huntsville, Madison and Decatur areas throughout the years. Nicole has been the choreographer for the Lee High School musicals since 2018 and can't wait to get started on the Musical for this school year 2025-2026! 

Dance Instructor

As of school year 2025-2026: DME (Dance Magnet Ensemble) has 3 separate companies: Elite, Major and Minor Companies. (18-19 dancers in each company.).  Minor company is for incoming Freshman and some sophomores. Major and Elite Companies are for upper classmen 10-12th graders.  All companies focus on proper technique, body alignment, correct stretching and warm up procedures. During fall semester each company will collaborate with one another on student choreography projects.  These pieces will have the opportunity to perform in the Fall Dance Concert, “Ignite the Fire”Each company works on ballet and jazz technique throughout the school year.  All companies begin working on student choreography projects for fall semester with the option of having their pieces performed on stage for the fall concert.  Students not only learn technique, but also learn important collaborative skills that will help them in their future career paths.

Tips for Applying:

Dancers need to have an understanding of beginner/intermediate Ballet technique.  Ballet technique is the basis of all dancing.  If time allows, the students will be taught 1 to 2  combinations to learn on the day of the audition and will perform the combinations in small groups.  The dancers will also perform a 20-30 sec solo showcasing their abilities. Dancers will need to come to the audition prepared to dance.  Students need to wear black leotards, leggings or shorts.  Please have hair pulled up in a bun or ponytail for the audition.
