Theatrical Arts

We’re proud to introduce the Performing Arts Conservatory—a new, university-style training model within our Performing Arts Magnet Program. Instead of broad, general classes, students will take specialized courses such as Acting Techniques & Methods, Directing, Pre-AP Certified Theatre, Voice & Diction, Classical Studies, Musical Theatre, and more. This focused approach provides the rigor, depth, and real-world preparation that sets our program apart, ensuring students graduate with the skills and experience needed for success in college and the performing arts industry.

Meet the Instructors:

My name is Jessie Kisor, and I’m proud to serve as the Creative and Artistic Director of the Lee High Theatre Magnet Program. My wife, Autumn, and I relocated to Huntsville in January 2024 after spending 13 wonderful years in Birmingham, and we’ve quickly come to love this vibrant community. In our free time, we enjoy cooking together—it’s our way of unwinding while experimenting with new flavors and recipes. Being part of the Lee family is truly a dream come true; the support from administration and fellow teachers is inspiring, and I’m constantly energized by the passion and creativity our students bring to each project, production, and competition. I look forward to helping them continue to grow not only as performers, but as confident, expressive individuals.

Mirji Campolongo

I am the new theatre technical director and this is my first year at Lee. I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and then moved up to the Bay Area for school. I moved to Huntsville to be closer to my family who had moved out here. In my free time, I love drinking coffee with my family, reading, working on a puzzle, and spending time going out to eat with friends. I'm so excited that I get to share what I'm most passionate about and look forward to working and creating with the students.

Perfomance

Our Theatre Magnet offers an immersive, pre-professional experience for students passionate about the performing arts. Through a rigorous, hands-on curriculum, students explore a vast range of theatrical styles and genres — from the roots of Greek and Roman theatre to the works of prominent American playwrights of the 20th century, and into the diverse voices shaping contemporary theatre today. With a strong emphasis on technique, execution, and artistic discipline, our program equips students with the tools they need to excel both on stage and behind the scenes. Throughout their time in the magnet, students build and refine a comprehensive professional portfolio, updated each semester, showcasing their growth, training, and performance work. We believe in real-world preparation. Students gain valuable experience through college audition readiness, performance showcases, and participation in regional and national conventions and conferences, including the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC). These opportunities connect them with industry professionals, higher education representatives, and peers from across the country. By the end of the program, our graduates are confident, versatile, and well-prepared to take the next step in their journey — whether that be pursuing higher education, entering the professional theatre world, or applying their skills in related creative industries. The Theatre Magnet develops not only exceptional artists, but also disciplined, adaptable, and inspired individuals ready to make their mark.

Tech Theatre

Welcome to technical theatre! Our program is student-driven with a focus on developing the skills needed to put on a production. First year student classes consist of obtaining basic skills and knowledge in technical theatre areas of study - lighting, scenery, props, costumes, sound, stage management, hair, and makeup. Advanced classes focus on project work that prepares them for leadership, organization, and design roles in theatre by learning about script analysis and research related to the productions and learn to fine tune their skills. As students progress through the program, they choose their specialization and begin assisting on productions as a student designer or crew leader. Our program also helps support our other magnet programs with their concerts including the dance concert and music recitals. During your time here, you’ll build a portfolio that helps prepare you for whatever’s next, whether that’s jumping into the professional world or heading off to college.

Tips for Applying to Our Technical Theatre Magnet:

  • To apply to the Technical Theatre Magnet Program, students must come prepared with a resume that lists their relevant skills and any experience building, designing, or creating something—this resume is a required part of the application. While experience in theatre related activities is preferred, it is not a requirement. Students can put in their resume anything that they have created or done with their hands or anything creative. This includes, but is not limited to lego building, model making, furniture assembly, software knowledge such as photoshop, event work, sewing skills, CAD experience, etc.

  • In addition, applicants are strongly encouraged to bring a portfolio (either emailed in advance or brought physically) that showcases their creativity and hands-on abilities. This portfolio can include theatre-related work or any kind of creative project, such as drawings, mood boards, LEGO builds, models, sewing projects, CAD designs, or even photos of constructing something like a shed.  We are looking for well rounded and hardworking students who are eager to learn and be challenged and try new things such as working with saws or use ladders and get their hands dirty. Students should also understand that this program requires a significant time commitment, both during and outside of school hours.
