Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Magnet Program at Lee High School is a specialized, intensive program designed for students who are passionate about developing their artistic skills and creative vision. The program offers a rigorous curriculum that blends traditional fine arts training—such as drawing, painting, ceramics, and fabrication—with contemporary practices in digital art, photography, and graphic design.

Students are encouraged to build a strong foundation in the elements and principles of design while also developing their own artistic voice through studio work, collaborative projects, and portfolio development. The program emphasizes both technical skill and creative problem-solving, preparing students for future opportunities in higher education and careers in the arts.

In addition to coursework, students participate in exhibitions, critiques, and community arts events, gaining real-world experience in presenting and discussing their work. The Visual Arts Magnet fosters a supportive and dynamic environment where young artists can explore a wide range of media, study art history and contemporary practices, and connect their personal experiences to broader artistic traditions.

Graduates of the program leave with not only a strong portfolio but also the discipline, confidence, and creativity needed to excel in the arts and beyond.

Meet the Instructors:

Coming from a military family, I experienced a nomadic childhood, traveling to 38 states and 8 countries by the age of 10. These early experiences shaped both my worldview and my love for art and literature. I graduated from David Crockett High School in Austin, Texas, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2006. After briefly running my own business and art studio, I sought a more substantial career path that combined creativity and community. Working with students in the Lee High School Visual Arts Magnet program has been a deeply rewarding experience, allowing me to share my love of art while encouraging the next generation of young artists.

Hello there, I am Ms. Susana Escobar. Welcome to Studio 302, housed in the Visual Arts Conservatory. Teaching within the magnet program here at Lee High School has introduced me to a plethora of motivated young artists who thrive in this specialized environment of creation. It has been a warm welcome into my first year of teaching and sets a high standard for our future students. Recreationally, I am a painter at heart, as I specialize in both oil and watercolor painting.

Hear from our artists

  • "What brought me to this magnet was 50/50, my mother participating in Visual Arts during her Lee High School experience, and my elementary school being the "sister school" to Lee High. I'm in the visual arts magnet program, but I also participate in the theatre and vocal programs. What I love about this experience is that I get to explore various styles and techniques of art. I love to paint the most, and the visual arts magnet offers painting classes of various levels. I get to create things I love under a curriculum that teaches me as well as lets me be free in my expression. While being in the magnet, I get many opportunities, such as participating in shows, going on magnet field trips specialized to my interests, and being around lovely people who share the same talents as me! I hope the magnet program continues for years to come because I believe it's beneficial and life-changing."

  • "I love being in the Visual Arts magnet because it allows me to express my authentic self freely. We work on various media and creative projects that allow me to experiment with my creativity, further developing my personal style as a young artist. What brought me to this magnet program was high recommendations from my older sister; she loved her experience and influenced me to check it out myself."

  • "The Art Magnet at Lee highschool interested me because the magnets allowed me to express myself while at school, alongside challenging me through the process. I am able to take time mastering a creative, artistic hobby I already enjoy doing. Joining the Art Magnet at Lee Highschool is a choice I will never regret, as I was able to meet other creative, like minded people, who to draw, paint, sculpt, and create alongside me as we all grow together."

Tips for applying:

  • 1. Build a Strong Portfolio

    • Choose 8–10 of your best pieces that show a range of skills (drawing, painting, design, photography, etc.).

    • Include both classwork and personal projects—teachers want to see your creativity and dedication outside of assignments.

    • Show variety (different media, subjects, and styles) but also include at least a few finished, polished works.

    2. Focus on the Fundamentals

    • Practice drawing from life (objects, people, places around you).

    • Show that you understand shading, proportion, and perspective. Even simple sketches can be impressive if they show growth and observation skills.

    3. Be Original

    • Try not to rely only on Manga, fan art or copies of cartoons/characters.

    • Include pieces that show your ideas, your personality, or your view of the world.

    4. Be Prepared to Talk About Your Art

    • Think about what inspires you, what materials you enjoy, and what you’ve learned from making your art.

      • Have an artists statement

    • Be ready to explain the choices you made in a piece (color, composition, subject, etc.).

    5. Show Your Dedication

    • Teachers are looking for students who are serious about art, willing to learn, and excited to grow.

    • Even if you feel “behind” in skill, your effort, creativity, and willingness to try new things can make you stand out.

    6. Practice Interview Skills

    • Be confident, make eye contact, and speak clearly.

    • You don’t have to have all the “right” answers—just show your passion for art and learning.

    7. Stay Positive & Open-Minded

    • The magnet program is about growth. We don’t expect you to be a perfect artist yet, but we want to see potential, curiosity, and commitment.
